As a founding member of Metallica, Lars Ulrich shaped drumming in the metal genre like few others. But Ulrich also has role models and other drummers who impress him. In an interview he has now revealed which band and drummer he is currently playing on a continuous loop.
Lars Ulrich professes to be a fan of Blue Öyster Cult
In the podcast “The Metallica Report‘ Ulrich was asked what music he had been listening to lately. The Metallica member responded that above all else, his favorite is a classic rock band from the ’70s. This is Blue Öyster Cult, whose drummer Albert Bouchard he particularly admires.
“I’m currently in a phase where I listen to a lot of Blue Öyster Cult,” Ulrich said in an interview. “For me, I’m interested in the stuff of different artists at different times, and at the moment I’m really into Blue Öyster Cult’s album ‘Secret Treaties’. In the last week or two I’ve also been listening through ‘Tyranny and Mutation’ which has ‘Hot Rails To Hell’, ‘7 Screaming Diz-Busters’ and ‘The Red & the Black’ on it. That’s why I have to mention Albert Bouchard, the drummer and one of the main songwriters of Blue Öyster Cult.”
What impressed Ulrich most about Bouchard was his role as another singer in Blue Öyster Cult. “He was one of the first drummers [in einer Rockband]who actually sang. So my tip is to check out a couple of Blue Öyster Cult albums. Check out ‘Tyranny And Mutation’. But a sure bet from the early Blue Öyster Cult albums is always ‘Secret Treaties’ with ‘ME 262’, ‘Dominance and Submission’, ‘Career of Evil’, ‘Harvester of Eyes’ and ‘The Subhuman’.”
At a concert in Stockholm, where they covered ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” on stage, they proved that not only Lars Ulrich, but also the rest of Metallica’s colleagues like to venture into other musical realms. In 2024, the metal band can be seen live again in Germany. Metallica will be playing in Munich on May 24th and 26th.
