U2 have announced that they will be performing their residency show at Sphere Arena in Las Vegas without Larry Mullen Jr. He will be replaced by alternative rock band Krezip’s drummer, Bram van den Berg.
U2 confirmed the move in a statement: “It will take us all to approach the Sphere without our colleague on drums, but Larry has joined us to say hello to Bram van den Berg.”
Mullen Jr. previously announced he needed some time off and would not be touring with the Irish in 2023. The reason for this are operations that the 61-year-old needs to be able to drum again. He also wanted to take enough time to get well again.
The Las Vegas show will take place in a newly built event location, the MSG Sphere. During the Super Bowl on the night of February 12-13, a commercial announced the concerts in a big way. The clip shows that U2 are bringing their seventh studio album “Achtung Baby” to the stage, in the video several songs from the record are played.
“The bottom line is that U2 hasn’t played live since December 2019 and we need to get back on stage and see the faces of our fans again,” the statement said. “We are the right band, ‘Achtung Baby’ is the right album and the Sphere is the right place to take the live music experience to the next level. That’s what U2 has been trying to do with our satellite stages and video installations all along.”
