The greatest damage to the Dutch railways has been repaired after storm Eunice and almost all trains will run according to normal timetables again on Sunday. The NS . has that Sunday morning announced† Only between Amersfoort and Apeldoorn, Geldermalsen and Tiel and Alkmaar and Hoorn is currently no train traffic possible.
According to the NS, recovery teams have “worked through the night to repair as much storm damage as possible” and that has been “successful”. Work is currently underway to allow the last trains to run again. It is not yet known when these last disruptions will be resolved. According to the KNMI weather institute, code yellow will still apply on Sunday due to strong gusts of wind. Code orange applies in the Belgian coastal regions.
Due to storm Eunice, which came ashore on Friday afternoon and caused gusts of wind up to 120 kilometers per hour, there were no more trains from that same afternoon. The damage turned out to be greater on Saturday morning than the NS had previously estimated: almost all train traffic was discontinued after all, mainly because of trees on the track or damaged overhead wires. A number of trains started running again from 1 p.m.
The storm also caused extensive damage elsewhere in the country. At least four people were killed. Insurers received thousands of reports of damage on Friday evening, before the storm was completely over. Schiphol canceled at least 167 flights on Friday afternoon and about eighty flights could not be performed on Saturday due to the storm. It is not clear how many flights were delayed or canceled on Sunday due to bad weather, an airport spokesperson said.
