Although the first users will not really start working in the new multifunctional building in Zuidwolde until Monday, the sports and culture house is already open today. The name was also revealed: ‘Wolderhuus’.
187 registrations were received for the new name, but there is only one person who can actually call himself the namesake of the new building. That is Wander Westerhuis from Echten, who was somewhat surprised by the news that ‘Wolderhuus’ will now appear on the facade. “I sent in the name and thought: I’ll never hear from it again. But I got a call in mid-December.”
According to the board of the Huus Foundation for Sport and Culture, Wolderhuus covers the load well. “A house for young and old, but it still has to become a home,” says board member Aafke Schipper.
Schipper describes the past year as a ‘tropical year’ for the board. “Some volunteers had full-time jobs on the side,” she laughs. “But it turned out very nice. We will soon have a place where the entire municipality, and perhaps even beyond, can go.”
It remains to be seen whether the namesake Westerhuis will also use the Wolderhuus. “We also have a village hall in Echten, so I honestly wonder.”
Yet he is pleased that the Wolderhuus will bear ‘his’ name for many years to come. “That’s nice, although the realization still needs to sink in a bit.”
