Large fire in Heemskerks nature reserve, emergency services turned out en masse

A large fire has broken out in the Heemskerk nature reserve north of Wijk aan Zee. The emergency services are present in large numbers and the plumes of smoke can be seen for miles around.

“We are currently on the road with many vehicles and water to get the fire under control,” a spokesman for the safety region told NH. “We are now busy with that, so we call on the public to stay away from the nature reserve.”

Access roads closed

The spokesman speaks of a ‘spreading fire’. They also ask the public to follow the advice of the emergency services, partly because of the strong smoke development. The police will keep the access roads to the nature reserve closed for the time being. A police helicopter is currently flying over the area ‘to get a picture of the situation’.

The exact cause of the fire and what exactly is going on is not yet known at this time.
