Lana Del Rey’s album cover was originally meant to show her naked

In a recent interview conducted by Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey revealed that the cover of her upcoming album was originally supposed to show her nude. But that didn’t happen because, “Then I thought about it, and I thought maybe not now because there are some other things I want to do that I feel like that might get in the way,” she told Eilish. The interview between the two pop stars took place for the March issue of Interview Magazine.

According to Del Rey, a nude cover would have been a good fit: The songs on DID YOU KNOW THERE’S A TUNNEL UNDER OCEAN BLVD are so wordy that they are “just as revealing as it is [Nackt-]photo would have been” if you listen to it carefully. “The idea behind it was that I wanted to show something of myself that I find beautiful.” But in the end she got nervous and probably feared something like a skipping action: “Because I asked myself: ‘Is that an artistic inspiration, that came to me, or is that a reaction to something I find critical about myself?”

When asked by Eilish how she felt about the new record, the pop star replied, “I was very excited at first because I started with Mike Hermosa, a cinematographer who, as far as I knew, wasn’t a musician. Every Sunday morning he would lay around and play these licks on his guitar. One day I asked myself, ‘Could I record that?’ Then I sat down and started singing.”

After five months, they went to the studio to meet up with Drew Erickson, Benji and Zach Dawes. “I found out later that the guys were composing for all these great people like Weyes Blood, Father John Misty and Pink Floyd.”

Del Rey continues, “Then Drew came in and recorded these beautiful strings. I talked about wanting a little spiritual element and we talked about that, with Melodye [Perry] and pattie [Howard] and working with a couple of women who were touring with Whitney Houston, which I just couldn’t imagine being in the same room with them. So I started developing an element of the sound for about a fifth of the album.”

Lana Del Rey’s seven-minute new song “A&W” was released on the same day that the interview with Eilish (February 14) was released. Just two days later (February 16), it was played more than 1.3 million times.

Their current album BLUE BANISTERS was released in October 2021. Half a year earlier she had released CHEMTRAILS OVER THE COUNTRY CLUB.
