BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) has again opposed scenarios of a further escalation of the war in Ukraine. When asked how NATO would react if biological or chemical weapons were used by Russia, Lambrecht said on Wednesday on ARD: “We are well advised to take such questions seriously and not rule out the possibility of such an operation kme, but we are also well advised to use the possibilities we have to point out what consequences it would have for Putin, for the country, what terrible consequences he would trigger and what it means for the people and that again and again to make it clear and not to start a wave of escalation now.”

On the sidelines of a NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Lambrecht said: “This is not a war in which NATO is involved.” Lambrecht emphasized: “We have to prevent a wildfire.”

Western countries had recently seen an increasing risk of biological or chemical weapons being used by Russia in the Ukraine war./bw/DP/jha
