Lale Gül considers moving abroad for security: ‘Still getting threats’ | Inland

After the success of the book I’m going to live several translations and a film of Lale Gül’s autobiographical novel will be published shortly. The renewed interest in her book may pose new threats to the 24-year-old author, so Gül is considering a temporary move abroad.

“I still get threats and also worry about what will happen if the translations of I’m going to live have come true,” Gül tells news site NU.nl† “That’s why I’m thinking about going abroad for a while and writing there.”

“The German version will be released on April 10, there is a large Turkish community in Germany that might send angry messages. Then there are the French and English translations and the film, so that might open up new things. A lot of people see it as an insult to faith and think I’m some kind of danger and can influence other girls.”

Strict upbringing

Lale Gül, winner of the NS Public Award 2021, comes from a strict Islamic family in Amsterdam-West. Her autobiographical book was published in February last year, in which she distances herself from her strict upbringing. The publication garnered a lot of respect, but also criticism and even threats. These had a major impact on the young writer, she even had to go into hiding.
