Lael Neale: “Star Eaters Delight” (Review & Stream)

On her last, emphatically minimalist album, “Acquainted With Night”, the songwriter sounded so enraptured, as if she came from a bygone era. All of the songs were written in LA, which she soon left to move back to Virginia, to her parents’ farm.

The music is more opulent, reminiscent of the quieter side of the Velvet Underground

But instead of delving deeper into her inner life, Lael Neale shows herself to be downright extroverted on “Star Eaters Delight”. The music is more opulent, reminiscent of the quieter sides of the Velvet Underground and, in spherical moments, also of Spacemen 3. The focus is on the eight-minute “In Verona”, a hypnotic lament about a society plagued by division and hypocrisy: “I don ‘t belong here!’ Great voice too.
