Lacesthe plot

In Naples in the early 80s, Vanda (Alba Rohrwacher) and Aldo (Luigi Lo Cascio) they lead an apparently quiet family life. Aldo works as radio speaker in Rome and one evening he confesses to his wife that he has her cheated on with a co-worker. The admission of guilt has the force of a deep gash.

Although the man explains to Vanda that he is unsure about his feelings towards his lover, his wife is overwhelmed with impulsiveness and sends him away from the marital home. Finding himself without a roof, Aldo takes refuge in the arms of his lover, Lidia (Linda Caridi)with which a coexistence begins.

Once the anger subsides, Vanda tries to mend the story with her husband by going to the radio. Qui encourages him to go home, relying on the duties inherent in marriage, including duties towards childrenbut the man is now projected into a new dimension, of which only he and Lidia are part.

Later, when Aldo decides to see the children again, Vanda accuses him of causing them stress and asks him to retrace his steps. Once again, however, the woman’s words have no effect and this time she, disappointed and tired, she reacts in an unexpected way. Blinded by rage, she attacks both Aldo and Lidia, although the children are also present.

After that, Aldo goes on with his life and almost erases the past. He does not care about the custody of Anna (Giulia De Luca) and Sandro (Joshua Francesco Louis Cerciello), rather he lets Vanda obtain exclusive custody. On a practical level, exclusive custody has the same effect as voluntary abandonment and the situation worsens.

Desperate for her husband’s escape, Vanda attempts suicide by jumping out of the window. He sustains serious injuries, but is saved and, little by little, gets back into shape. Even in the face of yet another request for help, Aldo remains impassive and remains with Lidia. The former spouses therefore undertake two definitively distant paths.

The surprising ending

A few years go by, Anna and Sandro grew up, in fact, only with Vanda, but suddenly they ask to see their father again. After a certain amount of stonewalling from the mother, they get the pass. Now Aldo is an adult man, perhaps more aware of the past, and he knows that he will not be able to continue for much longer to divide himself between two cities and, therefore, between two lives.

Furthermore, Anna suffers from the distance from her father and in front of her daughter’s love, Aldo leaves Lidia and takes a step back: back to Vanda. However, diving into the past is not enough to restore balance or to revive love. Aldo consciously chooses to go home, but without laces.

This means that he decides to stay next to his wife, while allowing himself repeated escapades with other women, as well as thinking of Lidia. In this context, the laces of the title are missing, that is, that link, that invisible thread that should hold the family together. Family that was marked by the breakdown of sentiment between Aldo and Vanda, the consequences of which have spilled over Anna and Sandro, played by adults by Giovanna Mezzogiorno and Adriano Giannini.

Siblings, in fact, are the real victims of the ups and downs of their parents. They never got over the separation or their mother’s malaise. Once adults, during the absence of their parents, they go to their home to feed Labès the cat. The stay becomes an expedient to talk about the respective lives and the traumas suffered by the parents. They decide, therefore, to take revenge and destroy the house.

Director Daniele Luchetti: «Lacesa film about the secret forces that bind us “

Laces it is the story of a family story like many others, over a period of thirty years, which spans two generations. On the one hand, there are the doubts, the paturnias, the failures of the parents. On the other hand, there is the sadness and frustration felt by children, unaware victims of the weaknesses of adults.

On the occasion of the presentation of the film at the 77th edition of the Venice Film Festival, the director Daniele Luchetti explained what prompted him to approach this tale. “When I first read Lacci,” she said, “I found questions that concerned me and characters with whom it was difficult not to identify.”

For Luchetti, the bond that binds the four protagonists is “more like barbed wire than love laces. Laces is a film about the secret forces that bind us. It is not only love that unites people, but also what remains when love is gone. You can stay together out of grudge, in shame, in dishonor, in a mad attempt to keep your word. Laces tells the damage that love causes when it suddenly makes us change direction and those – worse – when it stops accompanying us “
