Label legend Mo Ostin is dead

Mo Ostin has had an impressive career. He worked for Warner Bros. for more than 30 years and signed, among others, Jimi Hendrix, Madonna and REM. On July 31, 95-year-old Mo Ostin died in his sleep.

For Tom Corson, current co-head of Warner Records, Ostin was one of the best in the record business. He was a “main architect of the modern music business”. Ostin certainly showed his talent during his time at Warner Bros. Acts such as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Fleetwood Mac, Randy Newman, Grateful Dead and the Red Hot Chili Peppers were signed and kept.

Time at Warner Bros. over

In 1995, Ostin left Warner Bros. Records. The new management under Robert Morgardo is said to have been to blame. Ostin had previously worked for the company for 32 years. He then became part of Dreamworks and proved that he hadn’t lost his flair for young talent. He has worked with the likes of Papa Roach, Nelly Furtado and Elliot Smith.

In 2003 Mo Ostin was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Paul Simon, Neil Young and Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels delivered the eulogy.
