VfB slipped to last place
The future of coach Bruno Labbadia is not an issue at VfB Stuttgart, even after the 0-1 draw against VfL Wolfsburg and slipping to the bottom of the Bundesliga table. “That’s not up for debate. It doesn’t matter now,” said sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth. With six points from the last ten games, the Swabians are among the ten weakest teams in the top 5 leagues in Europe (to the statistics).
Labbadia took over the post at VfB, threatened with relegation, in December and succeeded Pellegrino Matarazzo and interim coach Michael Wimmer. Under Labbadia, Stuttgart have only won one game in ten league games – overall, Labbadia has an average of 0.82 points. “As far as my job is concerned, I don’t think much about it at the moment,” said the coach.
Wohlgemuth criticized the team after the defeat against Wolfsburg. Result and performance were “questionable”. The necessary determination was “not visible”. Labbadia explained that they “didn’t get access” in the first half. “We wanted to put Wolfsburg under total pressure from the start, but unfortunately we didn’t succeed. We lost a lot of hybrid balls today. In the second half we wanted to attack much more courageously up front. But it was only after the goal and the four substitutions that we got the grip that we wanted to have much earlier. We had a couple of turns but didn’t produce anything compelling. Of course, the situation in the table isn’t nice, especially given the international break.” VfB need to step up their game, especially on the offensive, in order to be able to turn the tide with the next game at Union Berlin on April 1st.
