La Trappe comes with new beer, but brother Isaac can’t taste it

The La Trappe brewers of the Trappist abbey Koningshoeven in Berkel-Enschot are coming up with a new and special beer. The proceeds go entirely to charity. There is a problem: the co-creator of the beer cannot and does not want to taste it himself.

“I will confess right away: I never drink beer,” brother Isaac Major laughs in conversation with Omroep Brabant. Still, he helped to come up with the beer called Tripel Traditionair. He did this together with the Amsterdam monastery brewery Kleiburg.

“Pure euros for a good cause.”

And that is not without reason. Het Kleilooster has a shelter for single mothers who need temporary shelter.

“This beer has resulted in friendship because we worked together, but also pure euros for charity,” says Majoor. The counter is now at more than 15,000 euros.

But what makes the beer special, apart from the approach? Major is a particular fan of the label – not least because he himself is depicted on it.

“This will be a collector’s item.”

“Yes, that too. This will be one collector’s item. In many years you will find this beer somewhere under someone’s floor, because that is where many people keep their specialty beer.”

The beer is characterized by a warm copper color – almost amber. “That color from friendship, which is also caused by working together. And that by two very different organizations,” explains the brewer.

Tasting it yourself, however, is not for Major. “It’s also Lent, so you can’t even finish a bitterballen.”
