The ailing FC Barcelona has to accept another financial setback. Because of incorrect tax returns from 2012 to 2015, the top Spanish football club has to pay a total of almost 23 million euros, as the State Court announced on Friday (February 9, 2024) in Madrid.
It was said that these were back payments and fines in connection with remuneration for consultants and players’ agents in these years. The State Court of Justice rejected an objection by the Catalans against a ruling by the Central Economic Administrative Court from 2020.
Appeal to the Supreme Court announced
The club has since announced that it will file another appeal, this time before the Spanish Supreme Court. Barça said it was “astonished” that “The State Court of Justice did not take into account the Supreme Court’s recent case law on this issue, from which other football clubs have benefited in recent rulings on the same issue”, said the club. The new judgment does not result in any payment obligation for the time being.
Four billion euros in debt
According to the latest information, the traditional club from the north-east of Spain, where German national players Marc-André ter Stegen and Ilkay Gündogan are under contract, has debts of around four billion euros.
