La albiceleste: How was the Argentine National Team shirt born?

Based on the colors of the national flag, although its light blue hue has had certain differences in its intensity and in the number of vertical stripes that compose it, over the years the shirt of the Argentine national team continues to arouse the same passion in a country where the sport of the ball is synonymous with unity and fervor.

However, its striking design has not changed considerably throughout history. The team used a completely white sports outfit, very different from the current one, when they played their first international match on May 17, 1901 against Uruguay. The albiceleste It was adopted in August 1908 and made official as its own, in 1910, prior to the dispute over the VI edition of the Lipton Cupalso against the Uruguayan team.

Since then, the shirt underwent some modifications, although it always maintained the base of its original design. A curious exception occurred on June 3, 1919, when Argentina played the Roberto Chery Cup against Brazil. There, Argentina used the uniform of Uruguay, and Brazil the uniform of the Penarol Athletic Club.

Traditionally, both the shorts and the socks have been black or white, alternating randomly between the two colors throughout history, and, in the case of the shorts, with short periods of alteration in between, as in the Soccer World Cup in 1930, where it was gray, and between 1999 and 2001, dark blue. In 1974 three white lines were added to the sides of the pants of the trademark adidaswhich remained in subsequent models until today.

For its part, the alternative uniform has evolved differently from the headline: between 1926 and 1957 it consisted of a light blue shirt and black pants with gray socks. In the 1958 World Cup and until 1961 it consisted of a yellow shirt, French blue shorts, and black and white socks. From 1962 onwards, the alternative shirt was navy blue and in the Qatar 2022 World Cup pulling purple blue, while the pants and socks have varied between white, black, and the shade of blue.

Both uniforms include on the left side of their shirt, since 1976, the emblem of the Argentine Football Associationwhich contains the acronym of said entity, on a shield surrounded by laurels, as well as, since 2006, two stars at the top, which symbolize the world championships obtained by the Argentine team.

Originally, it was sponsored by the English departmental company of Buenos Aires, Gath & Chaves, which stopped preparing the uniforms for the national team in 1973, the year before it closed. Currently, the brand that provides the clothing is Adidas. Starting in 1974, the logo of his sports sponsor was added to his right side; For this particular case, different companies have provided their services to the selected team, including three internationally renowned brands: the German adidasthe French Le Coq Sportifand the British reeboks.
