Record shortage of staff
There is a record tight labor market. Never before has the number of vacancies in relation to the number of unemployed been so high. This is according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. Every 100 unemployed can choose from 133 vacancies. At the end of last year there were 106. There are now more than 451,000 vacancies. Most vacancies were created in the hospitality industry, 15,000 in the first quarter. The shortage of personnel is greatest in ICT, transport and logistics.

Urn shot dead Kerkrade man stolen
The urn and a memorial of Dave Hanssen (31) who was shot dead in 2008 were taken from Schifferheide cemetery by thieves. After his death Hanssen’s ashes were interred with his already deceased mother. Both the urn and the memorial were stolen.

Asylum seekers Schinnen waive hunger strike
They threatened a hunger strike last week, but at the last minute the desperate asylum seekers from the emergency shelter in Schinnen give up. Most families find it too intense to start. However, their frustration about the poor living conditions in Schinnen and the uncertainty due to the lack of talks with the Immigration and Naturalization Service IND does not diminish.

Pamela Habibovic, Rector Magnificus of Maastricht University
She officially took over from Rianne Letschert at the end of last week. This makes Pamela Habibovic the second female Rector Magnificus of Maastricht University. The transfer took place during the Dies Natalis. Habibovic is professor of inorganic biomaterials and has been working in Maastricht since 2014.

Last BAL duel for basketball player Sander Hollanders
The season is over for Basketball Academy Limburg. The club from Weert lost in the play-offs to Feyenoord last weekend. The elimination also means that Sander Hollanders has played his last game for BAL. De Kerkradenaar was recently chosen as the best young basketball player in the Netherlands.
