The Zaanse korfball derby has become a prey for Koog Zaandijk. In a packed Groen Geel hall in Wormer, the home team was eventually defeated 13-25. Halfway through it was still level, but in the second half KZ rolled over Groen Geel.
KZ, number four in the competition, started the match as the favorite. But in the first half there was little difference between the two teams. Groen Geel put a lot of energy into its own game and did not shy away from duels. Groen Geel player Thomas Schagen did his team a good service by scoring no fewer than 5 of the 10 goals before halftime. Both teams therefore went to the changing rooms at a score of 10 against 10.
Resistance broken early
After the break, the spectators saw a much stronger KZ. Coach Tim Bakker’s team took distance in no time and took a comfortable lead. Injuries on the side of Groen Geel ensured that the resistance was broken early in the second half. Both Thomas Schagen and Sascha Horak did not make it to the end of the match.
KZ benefited from the quality difference and saw the difference increasing. Groen Geel only managed to score three times after the break and so at the final whistle there was a difference of 12 points on the scoreboard: 13-25.
With the victory, KZ climbs to second place in the Korfball League. We find Groen Geel in 9th place, a place that means participation in the play-downs at the end of the season.
