Kyrgios was lonely, depressed and had suicidal thoughts

Tennis player Nick Kyrgios experienced suicidal thoughts several years ago. The 26-year-old Australian revealed this on his Instagram page. Kyrgios also suffered from loneliness, depression and he took excessive alcohol and drugs.

“This was me at the Australian Open three years ago. Most would think I was doing well mentally or enjoying my life, but it was one of the darkest periods of my life,” Kyrgios writes with a photo of himself in the grand slam tournament in his home country. “If you look closely you can see the injuries I inflicted on my right arm. I had suicidal thoughts and literally struggled to get out of bed, let alone play for millions.”

Kyrgios calls on people with similar thoughts to speak out. “I understand that you feel weak or anxious when you open up. I’m telling you, it’s okay, you’re not alone. I’ve also been through those times when it seemed like those positive feelings never happened again would come. Please don’t feel like you’re alone or have no one to talk to about it. I’m here.”

Kyrgios now sees life completely again. “I can proudly say that I have completely turned myself around and have a completely different view of everything. I don’t take a moment for granted anymore. I want everyone to be able to reach their full potential and smile. Life is beautiful.”

Kyrgios was labeled the ‘bad boy’ of the tennis circuit early in his career. He openly argued with opponents on the court and was also repeatedly punished for misconduct. He is currently ranked 137th in the world rankings. Last month he surprisingly won the doubles tournament of the Australian Open with his compatriot and childhood friend Thanasi Kokkinakis.
