In March, it was announced that Seinäjoki Tango Market, one of Finland’s most popular summer events, would be renewed next summer. The musical offerings of the event will be diversified and in the finals of the competition, competitors will have to sing one piece.

The tango king of 2013, Kyösti Mäkimattila, commented on the reform to Iltalehti. He says he is excited about that change.

– I am really excited and even interested in that reform. While my external habitus may say otherwise, I am not a value conservative. In my opinion, traditions are best maintained so that they are constantly renewed.

According to Mäkimattila, tango and stroke circles have had their “own bubble” that needs new power. So he believes that next summer’s competition reform will provide opportunities for new people to join the world of dance music.

– I think a light music festival goer, a party goer or a pop music lover may suddenly find that hey there is a tango royal singing and this sounds nice to my ears. There might be a new audience on the dance floor, Mäkimattila opens his thoughts.

More than 2000 gigs

When Mäkimattila was crowned Tango Royal in 2013 together with Heidi Pakarinen, Yle was responsible for televising the competition. In 2017, it was reported that Yle would relinquish responsibility for competition and television to take over Alfa TV. This summer, too, will change when the competition is seen on the new Tango TV channel 17.

– I am really pleased that my coronation took place with a large fleet at Yle’s time. I got a huge bounce from it and have done over 2000 gigs since then. I believe in work and diligence. I’m not interested in being such a “star overnight” but in knowing what I’m doing and to whom.

– I feel like Yle reached a pretty good number of people on Saturday in July when it had both television and radio. That is why I am very interested in which direction this competition is going.

– I am also interested in whether people prefer to go to big festivals or dance stages. Will this situation now turn in favor of the dance floor, Mäkimattila continues.
