Kretschmann warns against self-deception when protecting health data

BASEL (dpa-AFX) – Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann has urgently warned against German self-deception when handling patient data in medicine. “We are the world champions in data protection in Germany,” said the Green politician on Friday during a visit to the world’s largest pharmaceutical company Roche in Basel, Switzerland. That’s a good thing, but it shouldn’t lead to clinical trials being relocated abroad. “If our standards are too high, then you go to Peru – that’s a kind of data colonialism. That’s self-deception and self-deception.” That must be overcome, said the head of government.

“We have to manage that we use the data and still don’t have a transparent patient.” But that too is a “shaky story”: Normally, people are absolutely in favor of data protection when it comes to health – it’s about sensitive data. But: “If someone has cancer, he doesn’t give a damn. He just wants to get well.”/poi/DP/mis
