Kretschmann demands: Indict Putin for war crimes in Ukraine

Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann has spoken out in favor of indicting Russian President Vladimir Putin for war crimes in Ukraine before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

“He’s waging a war against the civilian population, that’s quite obvious,” said the Green politician on Wednesday on the SWR1 people radio show. Putin even started the war by shelling residential buildings, Kretschmann said. “This is clearly a war crime and it belongs before the criminal court.”

According to the UN, since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine at the end of February, hundreds of civilians have been killed and homes have been destroyed in dozens of cities. Recently, atrocities that became known from the Kiev suburb of Butscha caused particular outrage among the international community. After the withdrawal of Russian troops, many dead bodies were discovered on roadsides, in cellars and in the ruins of houses in Bucha.
