Kremlin labels popular Russian rapper as ‘foreign agent’ after war criticism | Abroad

His name was added to a register of “foreign agents” on the website of the Russian Interior Ministry. The term is used to denote critics of the Kremlin. The rapper is one of thousands of Russians who have left Russia since the Kremlin sent troops to Ukraine. In addition, he has organized concerts in support of Ukrainian refugees.

Reminiscent of the Soviet-era ‘enemy of the people’, the label has been used extensively against opponents, journalists and human rights activists. They are accused of carrying out political activities subsidized by foreign countries.

Popular Russian science fiction writer Dmitry Glukhovsky, who also denounced the war, was also placed on a wanted list for “discrediting” the Russian military. The author of a 2002 post-apocalyptic novel, “Metro 2033,” was placed on the “foreign agents” list after a Russian court ordered his arrest in absentia for criticizing the offensive.

Feminist politician Alena Popova – who has long championed domestic violence legislation in Russia – and a journalist for Radio Free Europe, Irina Storozheva, were also added to the list of “foreign agents”.
