When the spontaneous Freiburg party was still in full swing in the stadium’s modern catacombs, Niko Kovac was already on the press podium – alone and without his colleague Christian Streich.
After the 2-0 defeat, the sobering coach of VfL Wolfsburg had to comment on a huge step backwards in the fight for Europe – he didn’t just protect his team. “We didn’t manage to get up. We rarely managed to resist defeat throughout the season. We deserved to lose,” said Kovac after Christian Günter and Nils Petersen conceded.
Sixth, seventh or eighth place? Europa League, Conference League or none of them? For Lower Saxony, it will probably only be clear on matchday 34 – and after the DFB Cup final a week later – which competitions the team will participate in in the 2023/24 season.
“Everything will be decided on the last day of the game. I’m not a prophet, but that’s what happens. We have a home game at home. We have to look at the others. The lads have developed well. I think we’ve developed well . We will see that we at least get the victory clear,” said Kovac.
