The korfball players of Koog Zaandijk have had a few lean years. KZ last won the national title in the hall in 2012. With new strongmen in the selection, the club has now started its upward trajectory again. “The feeling is that there is more to achieve this season than just the play-offs,” said player Esther Cordus.
KZ is currently in third place in the league. An important pillar of this success is Marijn van den Goorbergh. The 31-year-old korfball player has already scored 47 goals this season and sees that the team is getting better and better. “We have removed the high peaks and deep valleys. Last season we fell through the ice against lesser opponents. That no longer happens to us,” says Van den Goorbergh.
“We are on the right track, but there is still a long way to go”
Under the leadership of trainer Tim Bakker, Koog Zaandijk should become a proven title candidate again. As a player, Bakker was part of the golden generation at KZ, which won the national championship three times between 2008 and 2012. As a trainer, Bakker is hungry for new success. “Reaching the play-offs is nice, but we want more. If we can’t do that this year, then next year. We are on the right track, but there is still a long way to go.”
Hectic top match
In last weekend’s match against PKC, the Zaankanters came up just short. A hectic top match ended in 23-21, to the detriment of KZ. “There were two teams competing that were not inferior to each other. Towards the end we were slightly below, but I am satisfied. We could even have caught them,” said Bakker.
