Cyclist Olav Kooij has won the first stage of the Tour of Denmark. The ride went from Allerød to Køge over no less than 222 kilometers. Kooij, who is only 20-year-old, who drives for Jumbo-Visma, sprinted from Jasper Philipsen’s wheel to the stage win. The Belgian still finished second, ahead of his compatriot Timothy Dupont.
The sprinter teams checked in the final phase, with Jumbo-Visma being best represented, but Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) also still had sufficient support. The Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team came up in the last 2 kilometers, but in the sprint Kooij was supreme. It was his tenth win of the season.
The Tour of Denmark lasts until Saturday.
