kod.so, a free tool to enhance your code documentation

On GitHub, GitLab or even BitBucket, it is not uncommon for developers to share bits of code to create a site or a platform. Some also make coding tutorials in the form of YouTube videos or presentations. To do this, users simply take a screenshot of their lines of code. However, there are tools to achieve a more aesthetic and professional rendering, such as kod.so. It offers many features to turn its coding screenshots into engaging content.

Customize your code images

kod.so is a site accessible free of charge. At first, you have to copy and paste your lines of code in the part provided for this purpose, on the left. Each piece of code appears simultaneously on the screenshot visible at the bottom, just like the other modifications made. It is possible to fully customize the rendering, starting with the background of the image. The tool offers twenty-three different backgrounds: plain, gradient, with pattern, with effect… The possibilities are diverse. Nevertheless, one can always opt for an image without a background.

It is then necessary to choose a theme, which modifies the colors of its coding, the programming language (JavaScript, Apache, CSS, HTML, AppleScript…), a title and the font. Seven different ones are offered. Once we have modified these elements, we can transform the font size, change the alignment and even blur the lines of code of our choice.

On the rendering side, the code appears in a small window, similar to the one found on Macs. You have the choice of adding a shadow, defining the opacity, changing the color of the buttons… So many elements that allow you to completely customize your documentation in just a few minutes.

Once the necessary modifications have been made, a “kod.so” watermark automatically appears at the bottom right. It is always possible to delete or replace it. The screenshot can then copy-paste, download to his computer. kod.so also offers to get it as a URL. It is then possible to use it on different sites or media, especially as part of a tutorial.
