KNVB: Vitesse-Sparta finished without an audience | Football

In the event of a canceled match, the prosecutor examines professional football whether there is any fault for not finishing the match. In this case, the prosecution is of the opinion that this is not the case. After the referee stopped the game due to serious disturbances that also reached the field, Sparta indicated that it did not feel safe to continue playing football. The referee then weighed up the interests of all involved and independently made the choice to definitively stop the match.

Three options

It is then up to the professional football board to determine what to do with the remainder of the match. The starting point is that the game is played out. However, it is also possible to choose to replay the match in its entirety or to mark the score reached at the time of abandonment as the final result. The professional football board has decided that the remainder of Vitesse-Sparta will be played out, because this best suits the fair course of the competition, in which matches must be decided on the field as much as possible.

The remainder of the game is played without an audience. Furthermore, the remaining minutes are played under as many equal conditions as possible as at the time of the match. The new playing date will be determined as soon as possible.

Research

In the meantime, the professional football prosecutor has launched a further investigation into the disturbances at Vitesse-Sparta. This is expected to result in a settlement proposal for Vitesse as the organizing club.
