The director is working intensively on the third part of the crime series and already has a plan in mind.
In “Knives Out – Murder is a Family Matter” and “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, Daniel Craig solved the most difficult murder cases as detective Benoit Blanc. Now his story will continue. Director Rian Johnson comments on a sequel to the film series that he would already be “working hard” on.
“I have the premise, I have the setting.”
“It’s moving forward,” Johnson told US media outlet The Wrap when asked about the project’s progress. “Obviously I couldn’t work during the strike, and now that it’s over I’m throwing myself into it full force and that’s how it’s moving forward. I have the premise, I have the setting, I have what the film is in my head. Now it’s just a matter of writing the damn thing,” he explains in the interview. However, a release date has not yet been set.
“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” = complete success
After Benoit Blanc uncovered the murder of family head Harlan Thrombey (played by Christopher Plummer) in the first part of the mystery series in 2019, Netflix bought the rights for two sequels for 450 million US dollars (around 426 million euros). “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” followed three years later, in which Blanc accepted an invitation to Greece and ultimately had to solve the murder case of tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) on his extravagant private island. The suspects included politician Claire Debella, played by Kathryn Hahn, scientist Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.) and fashion designer Birdie Jay, played by Kate Hudson. After just 28 days, the star-studded crime thriller reached 359.8 million viewing hours on the streaming platform.
More from Rian Johnson
Rian Johnson most recently produced the thriller “Fair Play,” which was created as part of T-Street’s “Emerging Filmmaker” program. The production company, which the filmmaker runs with his partner Ram Bergman, promotes young talent in the industry. Director Chloe Domont’s feature debut is about the power dynamics in the relationship between two young people (Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor), both of whom work as financial analysts for the same hedge fund. The film was released on Netflix on October 5th.
