Knife ban zones must come more quickly

There are more and more crimes in the capital involving knives. But in order to enforce gun ban zones in Berlin, the police law must be changed. That should be a priority, believes BZ editor Hildburg Bruns.

Berlin doesn’t come to its conclusion: the announced knife ban zones will not be set up until 2024 at the earliest.

Although changes to the police law are currently being discussed, no-go zones can only be implemented with the next wave of reforms.

Increasing numbers of individually imposed weapon bans for alcoholics, drug addicts and the mentally ill show how common knives, daggers and blank guns are in the wrong hands.

The federal police are still there and have already announced bans on weekend nights at four Berlin train stations until mid-November. Other cities have long introduced bans on knives with long blades, among other things: Hamburg on the Reeperbahn in 2007, North Rhine-Westphalia in Düsseldorf’s old town and Cologne’s nightlife zones in 2021.

The results of the increased controls (of course you have to be able to do them) are positive.
