Leitsch and Mustapha are also missing
Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05 left for the training camp in Mallorca without striker Jonathan Burkardt. The U21 national player underwent knee surgery in Munich on Monday, the Rheinhessen announced.
Burkardt sprained his left knee in the last Bundesliga game before the World Cup break against Eintracht Frankfurt. The surgery is designed to help speed up recovery. The 22-year-old attacker is expected to return to team training in early January. Due to various injuries, Burkardt only started six games in the first half of the season and only scored his first goal of the season on the 15th matchday.
Also absent from the training camp are Maxim Leitsch (fatigue), Marlon Mustapha (rehab) and World Championship drivers Silvan Widmer, Edimilson Fernandes and Jae-Sung Lee. Coach Bo Svensson set off for the holiday island on Monday with a total of 24 players, including three goalkeepers. There are also two friendlies against RCD Mallorca on Wednesday and Saturday.
