Motorcycle racer Collin Veijer from Staphorst will start from the third row during the Moto3 race on Sunday. In qualifying he set the ninth fastest time.
With a lap of 1.41.758, the 18-year-old talent admitted almost six tenths to the fastest of the stuff. That was the Spaniard David Muñoz, he will start from pole position.
Veijer initially took on the role of servant for his teammate Ayumu Sasaki in qualifying. By getting him going, the faster Japanese had to go to the front row, but he set the fourth fastest time.
Once Sasaki Veijer had passed, the Dutchman had to put down a fast lap on his own. He did this by racing across the track in a group, where in the free practice sessions he consciously chose to go over the asphalt on his own (eighteenth time) in order to learn as much as possible.
,,He really works on his real speed, that’s important”, former national coach Barry Veneman analyzed at Ziggo Sport. ,,First he had to get going for his teammate, but once Sasaki had passed he remained calm. Then he could do a fast lap on himself.”
Veijer was not completely satisfied with his time. ,,I got in the way,” he told Ziggo. “So I think I could have gone a few tenths faster.”
