Knack Roeselare misses the CEV cup after losing in golden set
Set 1 : Knack cannot redeem set points
Two questions were answered immediately. Yes, Bruno is fit enough to play, and yes, Modena is motivated to achieve another European success. The Italians occasionally make mistakes when serving, but make far fewer direct mistakes than in the first leg. Moreover, the reception of Knack lets them down. At 15-19, Vanmedegael calls his boys to the bench for the second time. And that helps, because Knack fights his way back into the match, but cannot cash in on two set balls. At Modena they succeed, albeit with luck, when a service ends up in the field via the net, 25-27.
Set 2 : Italian force majeure
Knack has an excellent start to the second set, but gradually has to leave the initiative to Modena. Lagumdzija, top scorer in the first set with 8 points, remains a scourge for the Roeselare defense. Modena is 10-15 ahead. There is a flare-up with Tammearu being replaced by Rotty, but Modena continues to hold the upper hand, 15-19. Coolman provides a glimmer of hope at 21-23, but a clever Modena no longer gives the set away, 22-25
Set 3 : Knack needs golden set
Set three is equal, with Knack constantly having the upper hand in the score. A video challenge tips the balance to Modena, 17-18. The Italians steam through to 21-23, and Rinaldi gives them a first set point. Roeselare saves two, but Ngapeth still smashes the 23-25 on the board. 0-3, a golden set has to decide.
Golden Set: Roeselare cannot turn the tide
In the decisive golden set, Roeselare still leads 2-0 in a blistering atmosphere, but then Modena takes over and it becomes 4-7 through an unparalleled Rinaldi. Kukartsev then pounds into the block. Thus, the teams switch sides at 4-8. Roeselare is having a hard time, and also makes mistakes: Ahyi’s serve goes outside. Modena has the upper hand in the golden set, offensively and defensively. After the 7-11 it is all or nothing for the home team, but Roeselare can no longer turn the tide. Coolman serves into the net (8-13) and after another ball out, Modena gets 6 match balls. The second is the good one, Modena deservedly wins the CEV cup, after winning the golden set 9-15. No new European Cup for Roeselare, after winning the Top Teams Cup in 2002.
