Klosterhalfen follows in Lausanne

European champion Konstanze Klosterhalfen ran after over 3000 meters at the Diamond League meeting of track and field athletes in Lausanne.

Eight days after her European title over 5000 meters in Munich, the 25-year-old from Leverkusen only finished twelfth in 8:45.36 minutes. Francine Niyonsaba from Burundi secured the victory in 8:26.80 minutes, almost 20 seconds faster than the German record runner over 3000 meters.

Noah Lyles’ hope for a world record over 200 meters was not fulfilled in Switzerland either. As the winner, the world champion from the USA was only 19.56 seconds quick and thus far from the fabulous time of Jamaican Usain Bolt in 2009 (19.19).

Over 100 meters there was an outsider success of the American Aleia Hobbs, who won in 10.87 seconds ahead of Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson (10.88). Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica, who set the second fastest time ever this year in 10.54 seconds, was disqualified because of a false start. World Champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (Jamaica) injured herself while warming up and was unable to start.

Former European champion Mateusz Przybylko from Leverkusen could only jump 2.20 meters. He had to settle for seventh place. World and European champion Andrij Protsenko from the Ukraine won with 2.24 meters ahead of the Olympic champion Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar who was the same height.

Pole vault world record holder Armand Duplantis had already demonstrated his exceptional position the day before. After his victory at the European Championships in Munich, the Swede showed no signs of fatigue in Lausanne either. He won in the City of the City with 6.10 meters. The American Christopher Nilsen and Ernest John Obiena (Philippines) were second and third with over 5.80 meters.
