KLM has already canceled dozens of flights this Friday, because it does not expect to be able to operate them. This is partly due to staff shortages, but also due to, for example, a shortage of jobs at Schiphol and crowds due to the May holiday, a KLM spokesperson said. At least 28 return flights, so 56 one-way flights to and from Schiphol, will not take place on Friday. The company may cancel more scheduled flights in the coming days.
Last weekend, KLM canceled several flights due to a strike by some of the ground staff, who are dissatisfied with the working conditions. This caused great chaos at Schiphol – dozens of flights were canceled or delayed. The airport called on airlines on Thursday to cancel some of the scheduled flights next weekend, because it again expects large crowds and wants to avoid unrest.
The KLM spokesperson said that the company had already decided to cancel 28 return flights on Friday before Schiphol’s request. It is not yet clear whether the airline will respond to Schiphol’s request in addition to this decision. KLM is currently in consultation with other airlines about the possible cancellation of flights. The decision may be made later in the day.
