KLM avoids Sudanese airspace after an outbreak of violence, one flight diverted

KLM is currently avoiding the airspace of the African country of Sudan. Due to the recent fighting in the capital Khartoum, the airline flies around the country to destinations in Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. The KLM flight to the Kenyan capital Nairobi diverted to Athens this afternoon.

In Khartoum, among other things, the presidential palace has been taken over by the Sudanese paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), reports the NOS. There is heavy fighting in the capital, resulting in deaths and injuries. Passenger aircraft, including a Saudia plane, were badly damaged in fighting at Khartoum airport.

Due to the violent unrest, KLM is temporarily flying to and from a number of destinations on the African continent. Two Airbus A330s bound for Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam (both in Tanzania) are currently flying over the Red Sea via an alternate route.

Deviated

A Boeing 787 from KLM partner Kenya Airways to Schiphol flew through Sudan’s airspace this morning. The KLM flight from Schiphol to Nairobi landed in the Greek capital Athens this afternoon. According to a KLM spokesperson, that plane will be refueled there and then fly to Kenya with a modified route.
