Two former Bundesliga professionals shot former national coach Jürgen Klinsmann and South Korea into the semi-finals of the Asian Cup. With late goals, Hee-chan Hwang and Heung-min Son turned a 0-1 deficit into a 2-1 (1-1, 0-1) after extra time against Australia in the quarter-finals on Friday.
In the duel between two World Cup round of 16 in Al-Wakrah, Qatar, the former Leipzig player Hwang (90+6) converted a penalty that was awarded to Son. Then South Korea’s captain, who played for Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen from 2008 to 2015, scored 2-1 from a direct free kick in the 104th minute. The Australians took the lead in the 42nd minute through Craig Goodwin. In extra time, midfielder Aiden O’Neill was shown a red card for serious foul play according to video evidence (105.+4), after the referee had initially only shown him a yellow card. St. Pauli’s Australian duo Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe were in the starting line-up.
South Korea will now face Jordan (previously won 1-0 against Tajikistan) in the semi-finals of the Asian Championship on Tuesday. Then national coach Klinsmann has to do without defender Min-jae Kim from FC Bayern due to a yellow card suspension.
A fifth division player is included: all German clubs’ secondments for the Asian Cup
