SpVgg Greuther Fürth has clinched its first victory in the 2nd Bundesliga – of all things against SC Paderborn, which had been so strong up to that point.
Huge surprise in Fürth: The game association won the second division game against SC Paderborn 2-1 (1-0) on Sunday (September 18th, 2022). Damian Michalski (42nd minute) gave the hosts the lead, Dennis Srbeny (49th) equalized for Paderborn, Branimir Hrgota (73rd) scored the winning goal for the Bundesliga relegated team.
Thanks to the first win of the season, the Fürth left the last place in the table and moved up one place. For the controversial coach Marc Schneider, committed to the new season, it was the first success in the tenth competitive game. Paderborn lost for the first time after six games without defeat and fell back to second place behind leaders Hamburger SV.
Fürth with a strong first half and hit the crossbar
From the start, it was obvious to Fürth that they finally wanted to end their negative run. Although Paderborn had more possession of the ball, the SpVgg repeatedly caused danger in front of the East Westphalia goal with fast attacks. From the best attack of the 2nd league there was nothing to see for long stretches.
On the contrary: Spielvereinigung could have taken the lead in the 20th minute, indeed should have. Hrgota put on the completely free Dickson Abiama in the penalty area. The Nigerian put the ball in front of the empty goal from eleven meters to the bottom edge of the crossbar.
After about half an hour, Paderborn got into the game better, but Fürth managed to take the lead just before half-time. After a corner, Simon Asta served the ball to Michalski’s head, who nodded into the far corner from nine yards out.
Cold shower after the restart
Four minutes after the restart, the cloverleaf took a cold shower. Paderborn managed to equalize with the first chance in the second round. After a pass from Marvin Pieringer, substitute SCP attacker Srbeny sank the ball in the near corner from inside the penalty area.
Deflected winning goal
Paderborn continued to set the tone, but Fürth fought and rewarded themselves. Ron Schallenberg unluckily deflected a shot from Hrgota, the ball sank into the net behind SCP goalkeeper Jannik Huth.
Paderborn responded with furious attacks, the Franconians resorted to counterattacks. Jeremy Dudziak (86th) missed the final decision, failed because of Huth. In the end, Fürth brought victory over time.
