At the Drents Dierentehuis in Beilen, it is again very busy. It catches temporary pets from holidaymakers, but also dozens, if not hundreds of stray cats and dumped pets. Last week, for example, the animal ambulance brought a kitten that was dumped in a cat bearing bag in Klazienaveen.
The kitten was found last Sunday at the Antares in Klazienaveen, reports Dierenambulance Zuidoost-Drenthe via a Facebook message. The kitten is ‘gray with white feet and a white befje’. The kitten was taken to the Drents Dierentehuis after the find. “The beast was terribly hungry,” says Alwin Tol of the Drents Dierenhuis. “It ate so much that it had to surrender.”
Furthermore, the animal makes up for it. “It is a very cheerful kitten. It has since been vaccinated and furthermore healthy. He has now also made a boyfriend. We have put him with another kitten, so that he is no longer alone.”
These kinds of stories are the order of the day in the animal shelter, says Tol. The vast majority of animals in the shelter are stray cats. “Certainly in this time of the year. The dogs are not too bad, but we currently have almost three hundred cats.”
According to Tol, there are not exceptionally much for the time of the year, although there are “a lot”. “It’s the time that kittens were born and people all go on vacation. It takes longer with places, so we actually get more and more.” The animals are mainly found on the street and brought to the shelter by the animal ambulance.
In addition to the shelter, the Drents Dierenhuis also has a guesthouse, where pets are temporarily staying when their owners are on vacation. Last weekend the big crowds started in the guest house. “Many people left on Saturday and Sunday, so everything was brought on Friday and Saturday,” explains Tol.
In total there are about seventy cats and dogs in the guest house. “A lot comes from the neighborhood, but we also have a number of regular customers who have been coming here or have been moving here for years. On Saturday, there were people from Amsterdam who came here to bring the dog here.” Only dogs and cats can be taken care of in the guest house. “
