King’s Day isn’t until Wednesday next week, but Maastricht is already working hard to get everything in order for the big day.
And that starts on Thursday morning with the removal of traffic signs at Onze Lieve Vrouweplein, where the route of the royal family begins.
Traffic signs you can miss
Do not panic. First, the traffic signs that have no influence on safety are removed, explains a municipal employee. “About 80 to 90 objects will have to be removed. That’s a lot of work, so we’re starting now.”
Bicycles
‘Parking in box and up to 14 days’ which is written on the first board taken out of sight for the king and queen. “There is also a warning sign that all bicycles that are still there will be removed before the king’s birthday. So people who miss a bicycle should come and get it quickly.”
Chic and chic
For those wondering why all that work is needed for a few hours of partying, Widdershoven has the answer. “The party starts on Tuesday evening. Then the city is already full of revelers and that continues until Wednesday evening. Everyone is busy with it. The sewerage groups to the infrastructure and green teams. We make the city chic and stylish for the citizens and the royal couple.”
