King Carl Gustaf XVI of Sweden and Queen Silvia tested positive for coronavirus. According to the publication Aftonbladet, their illness goes away easily, but they had to isolate themselves in the palace.
As the official representative of the royal family, Margareta Torgren, told the publication, the king and queen are vaccinated. They passed the test just in case, given the large number of cases in the country in the past few weeks.
Torgren clarified that other members of the royal family, including children and grandchildren, Prince Oscar and Princess Estelle, did not fall ill.
In December 2020, Queen Sylvia toldthat at the beginning of the pandemic, she and her husband chose to isolate themselves so that, like other elderly people, they did not become infected with the coronavirus. According to her, they did not hold receptions and lived “like ordinary pensioners,” they cooked their own food, and a neighbor brought them food.
In the spring of 2020, the Swedish authorities refused to introduce a lockdown for all residents of the country, however, certain restrictions for the elderly were still in force. The incidence peaked in December, when about 10 thousand cases of the disease were detected daily.
Against the background of the spread of the omicron strain, the number of cases per day reached a record 11,500 people. At the same time, the mortality rate remains low. From December 31 to January 3, more than 42 thousand infected were detected. 20 people have died during these days.
