The King’s Predicament
Author Tore Rem tells about the personal plight of the king who drove the situation in a recent documentary. The monarch had to take a stand on the tensions between the institution, those who serve it, and human perspectives.
The documentary shows that Märtha Louise’s brother Crown Prince Haakon also had to comment on the situation.
– This is a difficult subject. On the one hand, the situation is that my sister has gotten engaged, and I have gotten to know Durek Verrett. I enjoy being with him, and I would like him to feel welcome in our family. At the same time, I feel responsible for our institution.
Finally, after several meetings and crisis meetings, it was decided that Princess Märtha Louise would give up her royal duties. The King’s House announced the matter at the beginning of November 2022.
– The ambiguities and questions related to my fiancé are typical of the fact that I will not perform official duties in the royal palace in the future. The decision has been made together with my parents, the king and queen, and my family members to restore peace around the royal house, Märtha Louise said.
Verrett himself commented that he started to better understand the role of the King’s House and that he wants the best for Märtha’s family and supports them in their role.
– At the same time, it is important for me to remain honest and true to myself.
King Harald says in a recent documentary that Americans don’t understand what it’s all about.
– They don’t know what the kingdom is. How would he even understand?
– He thought he could do anything without it affecting us at all, says the king.
– Now he has understood that it is a joint issue, and that he also needs to take our position into account, Queen Sonja adds.
– We’ll see. Isn’t this it, Haakon decides.
