Lion’s Den for Web3

Crypto company CoinMarketCap, which claims to be the most referenced cryptocurrency price tracking company, has announced that it will co-produce a TV series in the style of the well-known TV series The Lion’s Den. The format of the series, in which entrepreneurs try to convince well-known entrepreneurs of their business concept in the course of a short company presentation in order to win over the jurors as investors, enjoys worldwide popularity thanks to numerous adaptations. The German offshoot is the TV series “Die Höhle der Löwen”, in which the well-known entrepreneurs Frank Thelen and Carsten Maschmeyer have already acted as investors.

According to an announcement by CoinMarketCap, the concept is now to be specifically geared towards companies from the Web3 area. In the series called “Killer Whales”, new and innovative crypto and NFT projects should be given the opportunity to present their business concept to the public and at the same time court investor funds. Each episode is designed to focus on a specific Web3 genre, specifically NFTs, gaming applications, and other emerging crypto technologies. Shooting is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles at the end of June, after which the series will be broadcast in over 55 countries. The first broadcast will be on HELLO TV, 24 hours later the episodes will be available on the major video-on-demand service providers.

Judges are not yet known

In order to be able to apply, the project must already be published and an application form must be filled out. The criteria by which the judges will evaluate the projects will be no different than those applied to traditional companies, with an emphasis, according to the press release, “on the core team, the roadmap, the partners, the technology and the real problem that… they are trying to solve lies”.

The judges are to be announced by July 20, 2023 at the latest and will consist of the “most credible VCs, most notorious influencers and most famous founders” of the Web3 industry. One of the aims of the TV series is to “educate and entertain a global audience during prime time about the risks and benefits of Web3 technology,” according to the announcement.

Crypto recovers from crypto winter

It seems like all the recent turmoil in the financial system has boosted the popularity of cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin, the most important cryptocurrency, has been able to record a strong price increase since mid-March 2023 and was scratching the psychologically important 30,000 US dollar mark at the beginning of May. After the crypto winter of 22/23, in which crypto investors had to accept large losses, things now seem to be going up again. It remains to be seen whether the value will stabilize and whether cryptocurrencies can really establish themselves as serious alternatives to the conventional financial system.
