Ex figure skater Kiira Korpi recently got caught in the eye of a storm after it was published Just jump! – a book of poetry. Kohu was born when Helsingin Sanomat’s editor Arttu Seppänen gave a crushing verdict on Korve’s poems in his poetry review.
The critic described the work as a “wretched book of poetry”. He also stated that “someone else should have said that these are not good poems”.
Following intuition
Roope Salminen Three turning points In a recent episode of the podcast, Korpi talks about how writing has been one of the biggest turning points in his life. He started writing his book of poems while living in New York recently, not knowing that the texts would one day be compiled into a book.
When there were almost a couple of hundred short texts, the idea of compiling a poetry book didn’t seem foreign anymore.
– I just got the text, in a way, I was the only one who wrote it down. I feel that the book of poems was just amazing, Korpi commented in the podcast.
– Whether you want to call it a book of poems or a book of thoughts, whatever, it doesn’t matter to me what book it is. Those texts came to me as a really great gift, and it was wonderful to be able to pass that gift on, Korpi continues, referring to the recent uproar.
He says that he followed his intuition when writing his texts.
– It’s a really inspiring way of doing things, and I think that it’s a way that many artists are familiar with, Korpi states.
Gratitude
He thanks his sports career for daring to step out of his comfort zone and write a book.
– For that, I have to thank the athlete Kiira, who is there alone in front of thousands of people. It’s a pretty scary place to be out there by yourself in the starting position, and you’ve trained for four years for that few minutes.
– Such experiences no longer seem so scary, Korpi continues.
He says that he has received good feedback from his readers about the crushing criticism.
– I did get really good feedback from the readers that I was able to identify with those different moods. In my book, there is a certain kind of separation story, which is not directly from my life.
