Ambassador of Ukraine: Kiev will ask Ankara to close the straits in the Black Sea for Russian ships
Kiev will ask Ankara to consider the possibility of closing Russia’s access to the Black Sea straits in the event of the outbreak of hostilities against Ukraine. About it Reuters said the Ukrainian ambassador to Turkey, Vasily Bondar.
According to the diplomat, the ships of the Russian Navy pose a “great danger” to Kiev.
Bondar added that Ukraine has proposed “a number of initiatives, ranging from methods of consultation between the parties, up to the creation of a common mechanism for responding to security threats in our region.”
Turkish sovereignty over the Bosporus and Dardanelles was restored by the Montreux Convention of 1936. The document provides for the free passage of merchant ships through the straits (they do not have to pay for transit through Turkish territory).
In the event of a war in which the Turkish side is involved, it can close the straits for the country with which it is at war, as well as for any warships. The document also states that Ankara has the right to take the same actions if it considers that it is in danger.
