“What’s the deal with kidney disease?” For young parents Marije (29) and Ingmar (32) Malestein from Bunschoten, this apparently innocent question from a doctor is the start of a roller coaster that has still not stopped. They both turn out to be carriers of a gene that causes a very rare kidney disease in their now one-year-old daughter Tess. “What kind of future can we expect?”

Five percent. Tess’ kidneys don’t do more than that. But that five percent is the straw for her parents. As long as the kidneys are still active, Tess’ life can continue as ‘normal’ as possible with the help of tube feeding and sophisticated medication.
