The kidnapping of the 15-year-old boy in Amsterdam’s De Pijp was almost entirely captured on cameras in the area. Preliminary explorations, the moment the victim is approached, the way he is dragged into the bus and the liberation are all on screen. The recordings were shown today during the trial surrounding the kidnapping.
The seven suspects, including two women, were sentenced to prison terms of up to six years today. Three of them were arrested red-handed when the victim was freed, four others were arrested later.
Preliminary explorations
CCTV footage shown in court today showed a group of people doing everything they could to take the victim hostage. Faysal A. is said to have done several preliminary reconnaissance, and according to justice, Asmae el H. was the one who had to lure the 15-year-old boy and then have him dragged into the white van by Eedward N. and Diego S.
The 15-year-old victim was freed 45 minutes after the kidnapping. Those images, from officers’ body cameras, could also be seen today. Three suspects were led out of the van at gunpoint, and finally the kidnapped man was taken out of the loading space of the van in handcuffs. Later it turns out that he is under bizarre circumstances has been taken.
The kidnap
It is still early when on January 10 the 15-year-old victim wants to grab his bicycle in the Tweede Jan Steenstraat in De Pijp. A ladder blocks his bicycle and the boy is asked to lend a hand to lift the ladder into the back of a bus. At that moment he is violently dragged onto the bus and while he screams for help, the boy is prevented from fleeing.
While the kidnappers try to flee Amsterdam, they do everything they can to keep the victim quiet on the bus. He is given handcuffs, a bag over his head and a gag ball in his mouth. He is also forced to hand over his keys and telephone. The moment his mother calls, he is forced to answer and act as if nothing is wrong.
In the meantime, the white van is on its way to a holiday home in Langbroek – a town in the province of Utrecht – but they never arrive there. The police have followed the bus since the kidnapping and managed to intercept it on the A27 near Groenekan. The boy is freed and three suspects are arrested.
The motive
According to the justice department, the motive seems to lie in a home invasion at Minervaplein. Two tons of cash were reportedly taken during the robbery and the kidnap victim and a friend were said to have been in the home while the robbery took place.
The brother of the owner of the house is said to have spoken to the two boys ‘insistently’ about their possible role. A few days after the robbery, the same man allegedly had contact with suspect Faysal A. Shortly afterwards, the first preparations were made, according to the justice department.
“There is a search for holiday homes and one is rented, there are meetings between suspects. Telephones and a stun gun are purchased, cars are rented and the holiday home is visited and prepared. There are also preliminary explorations and a group chat has been created. The ladder has been set up and the handcuffs, electroshock weapon and gag ball have been placed in the bus. In the end, everything went according to plan due to the precise and professional execution,” the Public Prosecution Service said today. The public prosecutor today demanded prison sentences of three to six years.
