Kick-off in Saarland: Vernon sprints to victory in the prologue of the Deutschland Tour

Brit Ethan Vernon secured victory on the day of the Deutschland Tour on Wednesday (23.08.23). The prologue over 2.3 km in St. Wendel in Saarland was like a long sprint.

Second place went to Mads Petersen from Denmark, ahead of Maikel Zijlaard from the Netherlands. As the best German, Nils Politt finished fifth, three seconds behind, while Jannik Steimle was only slightly slower in sixth.

The tour leads over four stages from Saarland to Bremen. Stage destinations are Merzig (08/24/23), Winterberg (25th) and Essen (26th). A total of 120 drivers are at the start.

Several climbs on the first stage

On Tuesday, the first stage takes the field over 179 kilometers from St. Wendel to Merzig. The route is characterized by some very steep climbs – a chance for the classification riders to attack.
