Kherson in southern Ukraine ‘finally liberated’ by September, says local leader | Abroad

The Ukrainian army has begun to regain ground in this region in recent weeks, thanks in part to the supply of Western weapons. “We can speak of a reversal of the situation on the ground. In the recent operations, it was the Ukrainian armed forces that had the upper hand,” Khlan assured. “Our army is making real progress, we are moving from a defensive phase to a counter-offensive.”

According to Khlan, the current ground offensive was prepared with Ukrainian attacks on two strategic bridges as well as on Russian ammunition depots and command posts. He added that the Russian troops were unable to restore the Antonivka Bridge and, as a result, had difficulties in moving heavy weapons to Kherson.

The Russians took control of the city of Kherson on March 3. It was the first major city to fall into their hands since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24. The region, which is essential for Ukrainian agriculture, borders Crimea, the peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014.
