Khalid Kasem’s clever TV trick? ‘That’s how he wants to sabotage Eva Jinek!’

Khalid Kasem and his co-host Sophie Hilbrand are working on a cunning plan to sabotage Eva Jinek, media expert Victor Vlam suggests. “They’ve come up with a women’s quota trick!”

According to the AD, it is already all set and done: according to the newspaper, Eva Jinek will get an early talk show on NPO 1 and so many episodes have already been ordered that there would be no room for Khalid & Sophie at all. It is no secret that Khalid Kasem in particular has become very combative as a result: he wants to keep his job at all costs.

Women’s quota

Now a whole women’s quota trick has even been devised, says media expert Victor Vlam. He starts with an example: last week four women sat at the table at Khalid & Sophie to talk about women’s football. “That lasted thirteen minutes and then I thought: this topic is great for the women’s quota.”

Immediately afterwards, war reporter Rudi Vranckx sat at the table. “He sat at the table alone for eleven minutes. So he had almost as much speaking time on his own as those four women together, the four of them. And that is interesting, because the speaking time is never measured,” he continues in the podcast The Communicados.

How many percent?

In all kinds of studies, only the percentage of women and the percentage of men are counted, according to Victor. “But no one looks at the speaking time and they know that at Khalid & Sophie. I think they also realize that if they simply put four women at the table, that would be a great way to meet that quota.”

However, such a trick does give a seriously distorted picture, he continues. “The man alone had as much speaking time as the four women put together! You can also dismiss that topic with two people or even one person, if you are very honest. But then you won’t meet that women’s quota.”

‘I noticed’

Khalid & Sophie is actively working on this, Victor has discovered. “I have noticed for a while now that Khalid & Sophie are very busy with this. The number of female sidekicks who join there is really gigantic,” says the media expert, who has calculated and arrived at two-thirds female sidekicks.

Then why are they doing this? “I think Khalid & Sophie is making a very serious effort to ensure that they are the first talk show where the balance is truly 50/50 male-female. This is encouraged in all kinds of ways in public broadcasting and in the creative sector.”

Jinek sabotage

But what does Eva Jinek have to do with this? They’re trying to get in the way of them, Victor thinks. “Khalid & Sophie is of course on the chopping block, because Eva Jinek has switched to public broadcasting. She will probably take over the seven o’clock time slot. That would mean that Khalid & Sophie comes to an end.”

He continues: “If Khalid & Sophie indeed manages to meet the women’s quota, then that would of course be a strong argument within the public broadcaster to keep that program. They find that very important at the NPO.”

Historical

Victor thinks they are going to raise the women’s quota in a last-ditch effort to keep Eva Jinek out, at least partly. “It could be an argument for BNNVARA to say: ‘Yes, Khalid & Sophie, that should not disappear, because that is simply good for the number of women’”

Co-host Lars Duursma: “’We are the historic talk show that was the first to do that.’ That will be their pitch later?”

Victor concludes: “I think that will indeed be their pitch.”
