VVD MP Ruben Brekelmans sat at the table yesterday in the talk show Op1 to talk about how to proceed with the asylum crisis. There is structurally too little space, which means that hundreds of asylum seekers have to sleep outside. “There are 15,000 status holders in an asylum seekers center, who should actually move on to a home.”

‘It’s frustrating!’

However, there are no houses for that, explains Ruben. “There are simply too few homes and who can see that it leads to a lot of tension that if you give those people priority… There are also people who have sometimes been waiting for a home for ten years or more.”

On the other side of the table, Khalid Kasem, presenter of the NPO talk show Khalid & Sophie, is eating himself. “It is quite frustrating that Mr Brekelmans says here: ‘There are 15,000 status holders who have to move on to social housing, there is none and other people are waiting.’”

“False and hypocritical!”

Khalid thinks Ruben is a fake man. “I find this contradiction so false between people who have been waiting for a rental home for a while and those status holders, because it is indeed your party that has reduced the social housing stock by 100 thousand since 2015 due to liberalization, because part of it has been sold.”

He continues: “Stef Blok who is at a fair and says: ‘Come and buy here, because it’s on sale.’ That is quite hypocritical, if you ask me honestly, that you say here that it is that group in relation to this group. It has been your policy.”

Too easy

Ruben does not think that Khalid’s attack is entirely justified. “That is a bit too easy. There are all kinds of reasons why it is not possible to build quickly. This is partly due to nitrogen and partly to a shortage of people and materials.”
